Writing Instructions

Grade 5 GT English Lesson 24th February 2020
Deadline for completion Wednesday 26th Feb. 2020. All work can be submitted online.
Please follow the guidelines below.

Overview: Go for a hike in the hills or a walk in the park and find an insect to
write about.

a) Share this task with your mom and/or dad. You will need their help and/or permission.

b) Go to https://www.tavisdupreez.com/2nd-term-daybook-lessons---g5.html

c) Scroll down to ‘Lesson 7 - Main Idea' and click on it. Then, click on 'Creature Writing
Lesson
'. Here you will find all the materials you need.

d) You are going to go out for a hike and find an interesting creature (insect or small animal)
to write about.

e) You will photograph your creature in its environment. Be sure to include a photograph of
yourself with your creature. Later, when you submit your writing, also upload the photo(s)
on eClass.

f) Reread Fireflies in the Night and then go through the Lesson PowerPoint and other
resources that are linked to on this webpage.

g) With your parents, a camera, and necessary hiking gear, go out and find your insect, bird
or small animal. Observe it closely. Take pictures. Write notes about the whole adventure
and about the creature itself. Be careful, some creatures bite and some are venomous
(have poison). Make sure you know what you are touching and again; this is why it’s
important for your parents or someone older to be with you.

h) Once your observations are complete, go home and do some more research. Since the
libraries are still closed, you’ll have to use the internet. I’ve included some useful links on
the Lesson website.

i) Download and print GN pages 23 & 24. Use Page 23 to plan your writing. Refer to Lesson
PowerPoint for suggestions. Write your passage as a Personal Narrative Essay. (Use the 1st
person (I…) to tell the reader about your creature and how you feel about it.)

j) Photograph your 2 pages of finished work (pp 23 & 24) and upload them using  eClass.
