Summary writing is an important writing skill. As you rise up into higher grade levels you will have to do it a lot. It's a great way to really learn what is in a text, because to write a good summary you must understand the text well enough to:

- know what the most important ideas are (which ideas to include and which to leave out of your summary)
- write the ideas in your own words (change the words and sentence structure)
